Multiscale modeling of oriented thermoplastic elastomers with lamellar morphology
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are block copolymers made up of ‘‘hard’’ (glassy or crystalline) and ‘‘soft’’ (rubbery) blocks that self-organize into ‘‘domain’’ structures at a length scale of a few tens of nanometers. Under typical processing conditions, TPEs also develop a ‘‘polydomain’’ structure at the micron level that is similar to that of metal polycrystals. Therefore, from a continuum ...
متن کاملComputational methods for estimation in the modeling of nonlinear elastomers
We report on our eeorts to model nonlinear dynamics in elastomers. Our eeorts include the development of computational techniques for simulation studies and for use in inverse or system identiication problems. As a rst step towards the full dynamic case, we present the static inverse problem, with experimental results. We also present results from the simulation of dynamic experiments.
متن کاملMultiscale instabilities in soft heterogeneous dielectric elastomers.
The development of instabilities in soft heterogeneous dielectric elastomers is investigated. Motivated by experiments and possible applications, we use in our analysis the physically relevant referential electric field instead of electric displacement. In terms of this variable, a closed form solution is derived for the class of layered neo-Hookean dielectrics. A criterion for the onset of ele...
متن کاملFinite element formulation for modeling nonlinear viscoelastic elastomers
Nonlinear viscoelastic response of reinforced elastomers is modeled using a three-dimensional mixed finite element method with a nonlocal pressure field. A general second-order unconditionally stable exponential integrator based on a diagonal Padé approximation is developed and the Bergström–Boyce nonlinear viscoelastic law is employed as a prototype model. An implicit finite element scheme wit...
متن کاملNonlinear photoresponse of disordered elastomers.
We model the polarization-dependent photocontractions of polydomain nematic elastomers. Contraction initially arises by light-induced director rotation. At higher light intensity, strain recovers because the local order parameter diminishes. Thus we predict photostrains to be nonmonotonic with light intensity and predict the induction of a negative global order parameter for the system of polyd...
